Savimbo
The Savimbo Biodiversity Project focuses on creating a conservation economy by offering fair-trade biodiversity credits to small farmers and indigenous groups safeguarding tropical forests. Each credit represents one hectare of 100% conserved biodiversity in a hotspot, documented with photo or video evidence. The project addresses the lack of a certifying standard for biodiversity credits and involves indigenous groups, who, despite being 6% of the world's population, protect 80% of its biodiversity. The methodology, developed with their input, is under review by international bodies and certifiers. Savimbo's approach simplifies biodiversity science, allowing direct sales by indigenous groups and avoiding middlemen. The methodology, inspired by grassroots activism led by Jhony Lopez, is applied globally, benefiting ecosystems in various countries. The project aims to support environmental conservation while providing economic opportunities for local communities.
